Clare Newman, Executive Director, Trust for Governors Island
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
On 28 June 2021, the City of New York (the “City”) and the Trust for Governors Island (the “Trust”) released a Request for Expression of Interest (the “RFEI”) for an Anchor Educational & Research Institution to build, program, and operate a Center for Climate Solutions (the “Center”) on Governors Island, a 172-acre former military base located in the heart of New York Harbor, New York, NY.
On 13 October 2021, the Renewable Nations L3C, a consortium (the "Consortium") of multi-sector stakeholders, submitted an Expression of Interest (the "EOI"). In the weeks ahead, we are anticipating discussions with the Trust for Governors Island, respondents to the RFEI, and other interested stakeholders. During this time, we will continue accepting Letters of Interest from stakeholders in education, government, industry, philanthropy, and civil society sectors to participate in the Consortium.
The Request for Letters of Interest defines proposed Center activities within the context of a critical risk management framework (the “Framework”) developed by the Institute and multi-sector Consortium Members. The proposed Framework is informed by the following statement:

“The likely range of global temperature increase is 2.0–4.9 °C, with median 3.2 °C and a 5% (1%) chance that it will be less than 2 °C (1.5 °C).”
- Raftery, A., Zimmer, A., Frierson, D. et al. Less than 2 °C warming by 2100 unlikely.

The Consortium recognizes that the sheer magnitude of the global energy transformation ⏤ at a projected cost of USD 130 trillion by 2050 ⏤ can only be achieved through unprecedented engagement, collaboration and partnerships at-scale throughout the developed and developing world alike.
Hence, through the mechanism of this Request for Letters of Interest the Renewable Nations Institute and Consortium Members invite universities, independent non-profit research and education institutions, trade unions, corporations, philanthropies, civil society and non-governmental organizations ⏤ all sectors of society ⏤ to join in a unique venture to create a Center for Climate Solutions at Governors Island . . . and at university-based satellite centers around the world.
Your contribution to this unique opportunity at Governors Island to establish a leading, world-class campus dedicated to addressing the scope and scale of the global climate crisis is essential and truly welcomed by the Institute and Consortium Members.
Please join us.
Respectfully,
